George J. Mitchell Scholarship

The U.S. - Ireland Alliance offers a fantastic opportunity for post graduate Americans who have a future in community service and leadership. In 1998, the Alliance founded the George J. Mitchell Scholarship in honor of George J. Mitchell, the former U.S. Senator who was a significant figure in the development and execution of the Good Friday Peace Accord in Northern Ireland. Prospective graduates who demonstrate qualities comparable to those recognized in the esteemed Senator, such as honesty, integrity, and altruistic dedication to society, may be eligible to receive the one year scholarship. Worthy candidates should show an interest in learning about Ireland and Ireland's coherence with Europe. The recipients of the George J. Mitchell Scholarship must plan to attend one of many universities in Ireland and also commit to attending full time for one academic year.

Individuals who are interested in the scholarship and who are currently attending an institution of higher learning must get an endorsement from the college or university they are attending. They must also be able to prove, by previous and current academic performance, that they will have graduated with a bachelor's degree before beginning their study under the George J. Mitchell Scholarship. To be eligible for the award, applicants must be at least 18 years of age, but no older than 30, by October 1 of the year in which they are applying.

The application process involves a 1,000 word essay and an interview in Washington D.C. with a selection committee. Twelve individuals will be chosen to receive the George J. Mitchell Scholarship and the recipients of the award will have their tuition paid, in full, as well as room and board. All applications, reference letters, and endorsements must be turned in to the U.S. - Ireland Alliance.
