Texas Grant
High school graduates in the state of Texas who need financial assistance to pay for college could be qualified to receive one of the scholarship grants offered by the state. Established by the Texas Legislature, the Texas (Towards EXcellence, Access, and Success) Grant and the Texas Educational Opportunity Grant Program, provide tuition for four-year degrees and two-year degrees, respectively.
Texas residents that are eligible for the Texas Grant must have graduated from high school after the 1998-99 school year, with completion of either the Distinguished Achievement Program or the Recommended High School Program. Applicants must have registered in a non-profit public college no more than 16 months after graduating from high school, but must have less than 30 credit hours earned. Alternately, students who have earned an associates degree are eligible for this scholarship grant if they have reentered college within 12 months of earning the degree. The Texas Grant covers tuition for courses in pursuit of a bachelor's degree, for up to five years for a four-year program or six years for a five-year program, or a maximum of 150 credit hours. Students who have associate degrees receive tuition for 90 credit hours, or up to three years for four-year plans and up to four years for five-year plans.
The Texas Educational Opportunity Grant Program is offered to Texas residents who are attending a public two-year institution in Texas, and who are receiving less than $2,000 in contributions from their family. Attendance must be part time and the student can currently have no more than 30 credit hours in a two-year degree or certificate program. This scholarship grant covers full tuition for up to four years, 75 credit hours, or until the degree program is complete.
Application for either grant can be made by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
