Medical Scholarships

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association hopes to encourage the pursuit of research concerning heart disease and stroke by providing student scholarships to students who are in medical school. Students in various areas of healthcare and medicine are sought after for these scholarships while they are still in their master's level of study.

The Student Scholarship in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke is a stipend award of $2,000 for the scholar to use for any expenses related to the research of cardiovascular disease. The top scholar who receives this award is named the Howard S Silverman Scholar and is given an extra $1,000 stipend. The payment is made directly to the institution.

Students who are awarded the Student Scholarship in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke are also awarded a $2,000 stipend, with $1500 of it being paid to the institution before the research begins. The scholar is obligated to turn in a report when the research is complete, as is the supervisor and the grants officer. Only then will the remainder of the scholarship be paid to the school. If the student submits an abstract to the AHA International Stroke Conference, an additional $750 will be given to cover the expense of travel to the conference.

The selection process for the AHA student scholarships depends on the institution, the student, and the research proposal. The institution must be located in the United States and must offer adequate supervision and accommodations for the research. Each school in a college or university can choose up to five candidates for the scholarships, but one school is only allowed to receive one scholarship. Scholars can be chosen even if the institution is not the school they are attending: they must obtain written permission from the dean of their school to research at another college or university.
